The North Coast Association's Sunday League is approaching the conclusion of its eighth season, with more than 220 bowlers participating in this years' league.

Founded in 1980, the NCBA started with approximately 20 teams, each with five members. Expansion has seen the Sunday league grow to 32 teams, each with seven members (five bowlers and two alternates). The seven-member teams allow for occasional bowler absenteeism during the 32-week season. Teams are either self sponsored or sponsored by gay-oriented businesses, and consist of both male and female bowlers.

NCBA is sanctioned by the International Gay Bowling Organization, an organization with over 30,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. Most IGBO cities send representatives to the yearly meetings, held in conjunction with their Annual Memorial Day Tournament. This years' tournament will be held in Cincinnati, May 26-28, and is expected to attract about 1,000 keglers.

IGBO member cities may also host their own tournaments during the year. Cleveland will host their fourth annual Gay Invitational Fellowship Tournament (GIFT) at Buckeye Lanes in North

18 and the registration deadline (not firm) was April 24. IGBO sanctions over 30 tournaments yearly and registers both teams and individual bowlers.

With the NCBA's season winding down, league secretary Bill Harrison is already planning for the start of the next

season.

"We are considering possibly enlarging the league," states Harrison. The NCBA has tentative plans on "more advertising to bring in more women bowlers," explains Harrison.

Last year, 43 women bowled in the league. This year the total dropped to only 16 women keglers.

NCBA league championship play begins on May 7, with the grand title matches being held May 14. The league encourages everyone who would like to watch the championships to stop by the Ambassador/Superior Lanes, 1500 Superior Avenue at 1:30 p.m.

A summer "no tap" league is now forming. The season will begin June 1 and will last approximately 12 weeks. The league will bowl at Westgate Lanes in Westlake.

The North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance met in Atlanta, Ga. in February for the first of two annual meetings. On the agenda were officer elections, finalization of World Series '89 festivities and announcement of the host city for World Series '90.

NAGAAA was created in 1977, as a national organization of men and women promoting softball, good health and a positive image of the gay lifestyle. NAGAAA has experienced steady growth, from its humble beginnings in San Francisco to a current membership of 21 cities in the U.S. and Canada.

In 12 years NAGAAA has grown from a single Open Division, made up of teams comprised of men and women or team of exclusively men to three divisions.

The Women's Division was added in 1985 to provide open competition of predominantly lesbian softball. The first Women's Softball World Series '85 was held in Milwaukee and was won by the San Diego Spoilers. The newest Women's Division member cities are Chicago, Ill., Columbus, Ohio, Washington, D.C., and Birmingham, Ala.

A Recreational Division has been added for the 1989 season and will be apart of World Series competition this year.

Atlanta will be the host city for World Series '89 and the Hotlanta Softball League has announced final plans for the week's festivities. The series will take place August 21-28, with opening ceremonies scheduled for August 23rd. Opening day games will feature Boston and Atlanta (Open Division) and Houston and Atlanta (Women's Division). Atlanta will also host teams competing in the Recreational Division.

The Steel City Softball League, Pittsburgh, Pa. was chosen through the NAGAAA's bidding process to host World Series '90. Over 70 teams will compete in the three divisions to be held August 19-26, 1990.

Also discussed at the meetings were proposals to alleviate the World Series expenses for the host city. The NAGAAA council members met with representatives of Delta Airlines to discuss corporate sponsorship to help out these expenses. Additional meetings are schedule with other corporations for further discussion of sponsorship. Council members also had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Atlanta mayor's office and the local new media.

General requirements to become a member of NAGAAA are varied. Teams can be men's, women's, or co-ed team, and either competitive or recreational in nature. Teams must also be four team league membership or qualification for NAGAAA playoff procedure.
